Welcome to my post for The Shadow Soul book tour! I have a review coming up, as well as a giveaway for copies of The Shadow Soul. But, first, allow me to introduce the book:
Release date: February 20, 2014
Genre: YA Fantasy
Series: A Dance of Dragons #1
GAME OF THRONES meets GRACELING in a new young adult fantasy by bestselling author Kaitlyn Davis. Told in alternating male and female perspectives, THE SHADOW SOUL has been hailed as "an amazing start to a new series that is going to have people of all ages wanting so much more." (Happy Tails & Tales Reviews)
When Jinji's home is destroyed, she is left with nowhere to run and no one to run to—until she meets Rhen, a prince chasing rumors that foreign enemies have landed on his shores. Masquerading as a boy, Jinji joins Rhen with vengeance in her heart. But traveling together doesn't mean trusting one another, and both are keeping a deep secret—magic. Jinji can weave the elements to create master illusions and Rhen can pull burning flames into his flesh.
But while they struggle to hide the truth, a shadow lurks in the night. An ancient evil has reawakened, and unbeknownst to them, these two unlikely companions hold the key to its defeat. Because their meeting was not coincidence—it was fate. And their story has played out before, in a long forgotten time, an age of myth that is about to be reborn…
My Rating: 3 Roses
Jinji was a good heroine. She was strong and absolutely determined to get her revenge for her entire village's deaths. She was clever, and refused to back down, even facing an extremely powerful enemy. I thought she was great.
Rhen was also wonderful. He was very loyal to his family and to his people. He was sweet and more clever than anyone, especially his family, gave him credit for. I really liked him.
The romance in this book was almost nonexistent. It was more of a potential for romance, with Jinji having a crush on Rhen and Rhen being entranced by the one glimpse he had of Jinji dressed as a girl, which he thought was a dream of someone else. Perhaps there will be more to their relationship in book 2.
The plot was good. I wasn't really hooked. I couldn't get myself totally drawn in. But, I was still kept interested the entire way through. I liked the story and the ending has me curious enough for book 2.
The Shadow Soul was a good YA fantasy read. Though I didn't love it, I still liked it and I still look forward to book 2. YA lovers, you might want to check this book out.
