These Broken Stars (Starbound, #1)
Release date: December 10, 2013
Publisher: Disney Hyperion
Genre: YA Sci-Fi/Dystopia Romance
Series: Starbound #1

It's a night like any other on board the Icarus. Then, catastrophe strikes: the massive luxury spaceliner is yanked out of hyperspace and plummets into the nearest planet. Lilac LaRoux and Tarver Merendsen survive. And they seem to be alone.

Lilac is the daughter of the richest man in the universe. Tarver comes from nothing, a young war hero who learned long ago that girls like Lilac are more trouble than they’re worth. But with only each other to rely on, Lilac and Tarver must work together, making a tortuous journey across the eerie, deserted terrain to seek help.

Then, against all odds, Lilac and Tarver find a strange blessing in the tragedy that has thrown them into each other’s arms. Without the hope of a future together in their own world, they begin to wonder—would they be better off staying here forever?

Everything changes when they uncover the truth behind the chilling whispers that haunt their every step. Lilac and Tarver may find a way off this planet. But they won’t be the same people who landed on it.

The first in a sweeping science fiction trilogy, These Broken Stars is a timeless love story about hope and survival in the face of unthinkable odds.

My Rating: 5 Roses

Holy s***! I don't think there are even words to describe how totally, absolutely, completely amazing this book was. These Broken Stars was beyond words. It was just breathtaking. Saying I loved it would be a vast understatement. It. Was. Brilliant!

One of the best parts about this book is, without a doubt, the flawless setting. The author did a fantastic job creating the setting. As I was reading, the descriptions had me feeling like I was in that expansive, gorgeous world that the characters were in. From the spaceship, to the strange planet, the setting was just perfectly done. It drew me in and really brought me into the world of the characters in a way that had me completely absorbed. And the whole alien thing, the creatures that lived on the planet? Let me tell you, it was downright spine chilling, at first because the voices were creepy and, later, because of the beauty of how they were portrayed. The world that was created was just phenomenal.

Lilac seems like a weak and snobby society girl on the surface. But, don't let that fool you. This girl has an incredible amount of strength and resilience, in more ways than one. She's learned to not let anyone get close, lest her father disapprove. And her father, being the one of the most powerful men in the universe, can do something very bad when he disapproves. So, despite how much she might want to get close to someone (read: Tarver), she had to keep up a wall bigger than the one in China. That in itself took a lot of strength. And, when she was stranded on the planet, she still wasn't one to back down. She managed to keep right up with Tarver, who had military training in survival. And, after that ending, I don't think there is anything that can keep her down. I really liked her character. She's definitely earned a top spot on my list of favorite heroines.

Tarver was just as amazing. Born a lowly country boy, he quickly rose in status in the military until he was rubbing elbows with the rich and powerful. But, at his heart, he's still a humble boy from the country. And that made him so sweet and adorable. Don't think that's all there is to him, though. When he's in his element, surviving on a strange planet, he also proves to me incredibly strong, capable, and confident. Add in his good looks and you have a perfect book boyfriend. I absolutely adored this guy. He was just wonderful and I don't think anyone can read this book and not adore him.

The romance was ah-mazing! It was just brilliantly done. The progression of it, the portrayal of their feelings, it was all perfect. Though Lilac and Tarver were immediately attracted to each other, their romance doesn't appear just as quickly. It slowly developed in a way that was realistic and very sweet. The depth of their feelings were increasingly obvious as the book went on. These two were just perfect together!

The plot was a roller coaster. I was utterly hooked from page one and riveted the rest of the way through. This book was fast paced and there were twists and turns that I never saw coming. Especially with what happened near the end of the book with Lilac. I almost had a heart attack and how it was resolved was even more thrilling. And the ending was perfection. I can't wait to get my hands on the next book. I just have to read more from this amazing world! I'm anxious to see more from this series and from these authors.

These Broken Stars was beyond perfect. I loved every single moment of it! There aren't even words to describe how amazing this book was and how much I adored it. Every needs to read this book because it's just magnificent!

Today, I have a New Adult romance that sounds interesting: Pulse by Brooke Jaxsen. Go forth and get it for free!

Emma had never expected to get accepted to University of California, Beverly Hills, or to get chosen by Omega Mu Gamma, the most exclusive sorority on campus, but once she did, she found her lifestyle had changed forever. During the day she went to class, in the afternoons, shopped until she dropped and went to the spa, but at night? She drank by the bottle at the hottest club in town, Club Grit, popped pills, and tried any new drug once, with any guy that asked and with any sorority sister that commanded it. One changed all that, the kind of guy she'd never find herself wanting to date: Skylar.

Skylar was just trying to do his job. As a bouncer at Club Grit, he saw girls like Emma on a nightly basis and knew that she wasn't his type. He wasn't into girls that got that wasted and danced with dangerous guys. He also wasn't supposed to give her a cab ride back to the sorority house when she got too fucked up to get herself back on her own. He definitely wasn't supposed to do it twice.

He's the one guy that doesn't want her or the problems that comes with dating a girl like her.

She's the one girl he can't stay away from, the one he can't stop himself from saving.

He's her salvation.

She's his redemption.

And somehow, she's going to make it through this fucked up world alive. He's not about to let her pulse stop.
