If You Leave (Beautifully Broken #2) by Courtney Cole + Featured Freebie

If You Leave (Beautifully Broken, #2)
26-year old Gabriel Vincent is a badass hero. Or he used to be, anyway. As an ex-Army Ranger, Gabe never thought he needed anyone. But after one horrible night in Afghanistan scars him in a way that he can't get past, he needs someone who can help him heal...even if he doesn't realize it.

25-year old Madison Hill doesn't need anybody...or so she thinks. She grew up watching her parents' messed-up abusive relationship and she knows there's no way in hell that she's ever letting that happen to her.

They don't know it in the beginning, but Gabriel and Madison will soon develop a weakness: Each other.

But Gabriel's got a secret, a hidden monster that he's afraid Maddy could never overcome... And Maddy's got issues that she's afraid Gabe will never understand. They quickly realize that they need each other to be whole, but at the same time they know that they've got demons to fight.

And the problem with demons is that they never die quietly.

My Rating: 4.5 Roses

Hot, steamy, and full of emotion, this book was absolutely wonderful! I loved If You Leave. After reading If You Stay and loving it as much as I did, I had high expectations for this book. And it met every one.

Maddy took a while to grow on me. At first, she comes off as kind of harsh and abrasive. Prickly, if you will. But, as the book goes on and she opens up, we get to see what really drives her character. And, after seeing that, I really liked her. She was a very strong heroine. She's spent her life doing her best to take care of Mila and bearing the effects of her parents' marriage. And, even after everything she goes through in the duration of this book alone, she stays strong and moves on. She was wonderful, really a great character.

Gabriel was amazing! I adored him so much. He's a retired soldier haunted by what he saw in the war. Particularly, one event that he blames himself for. But, despite what he thinks, it's immediately obvious that Gabriel is a good man to the bone. He was sweet, protective of his loved ones, and stronger than he gave himself credit for. Not to mention his unbearable attractiveness. He was brilliant and lovable and anyone who reads this book would adore him.

The romance was hot and emotional. These two had some serious sparks that led to some steamy scenes. And, they definitely had the sweetness factor as they helped each other heal from the past. I had only one complaint about this book and it was that the romance lacked the intensity that made If You Stay so good. Not that it was bland. It was definitely scorching. But, I didn't feel that same fire between them that made Pax and Mila's relationship so brilliant. However, I still thought they were a lovely couple.

Of course, we see Pax and Mila again in this book. I really liked that they weren't brushed aside and brought in only briefly as a cameo. Their story was still going and we see them go through more trials. And, on that note, I'll let you stew about what I mean and move on  :)

The plot was fast paced and I was hooked the entire way through. The emotions in this book, like in Courtney Cole's other books, are deep and engaging and drew me into the story. And the ending was perfect!

If You Leave was a brilliant New Adult read. Just wonderful! Fans of book 1 in the series, you won't be disappointed. And for those who haven't started this series, what are you waiting for? This book is definitely not to be missed.
