The Morning Star Blog Tour: Guest Post + Giveaway

Welcome to my post for The Morning Star blog tour! I have a guest post and a giveaway for copies of The Morning Star as well as several other book and swag prizes. But, first allow me to introduce the book and turn it over to the author:

The Morning Star

Being the daughter of Lucifer keeps seventeen year old Dawn Belial busy. For almost her entire lifetime, she has been trying to think of a way to free her Archangel mother, Michaela, whom her father has held captive for centuries. She's also attending high school - balancing trigonometry, history, and recruiting souls for her father along with her wicked half-sister, Venus.

There has been no time for love until she meets mysterious Gabriel, a British exchange student. As they fall in love against their will, she discovers a startling secret about him, and a shocking connection to her mother that changes everything.

Guest Post:

I had been wanting to write a novel for a while. Scratch that, I had actually written a short crappy one in high school, a young adult book along with several short stories that I had written for fun and for various contests. One day in 2005, my mind began to wander as it usually does, and I was thinking about the Bible, Heaven, Hell, angels, etc. I had a different idea in mind (which I still may write, but it's along the lines of Salman Rushdie's "the Satanic Verses", and I don't want to bring upon the wrath of God-fearing Christians!). I started thinking about Lucifer and how he was the most beautiful angel, and he was created out of love and goodness, and thought that there still has to be some of that in him somewhere. It transpired from there into me wanting to write a love story about Lucifer and one of the archangels - Michaela.

I had been reading about angels and archangels trying to find if there are indeed females and most of what I came across said that they were considered to be genderless or all male. So I sat on it for a while, and I heard about Twilight. And I thought, well why not make Lucifer a dad and have it be a forbidden love story between his daughter, who was a demon, and an angel? A forbidden love story a la Romeo and Juliet and
Twilight. But I didn't have a motivation, a reason - how and why did Lucifer become a father? what kind of father would be be? So I sat on it for a few more years, finally mapping out a first chapter, which was very different from the one I have now, and in the meantime began writing a sci-fi novel.

I had intended on completing that one, and was about half-way through when inspiration suddenly hit, and I revisited The Morning Star. Lucifer's reason for being banished from Heaven would be because of love, because isn't that the thing that makes us all crazy at one time or another in our lives? He would kidnap Michaela, who is in love with archangel Ramiel. Eventually she would bear a child with Lucifer, and that child
and Ramiel’s child would eventually fall in love. That idea became the catalyst for how the story would be woven, and in turn be enough material to continue on with the story for at last 2 more books. Then I began to think about Cinderella and the whole wicked stepmother angle. I had read that prior to Eve, Lilith was created for Adam, but she rebelled. In SumeroBabylonian legends, Lilith was considered to be a demon. She also represented lust during the Christian Middle Ages. In the Kabbalah, she was the equal or partner of Lucifer. So I borrowed from each legend to create my version of Lilith, throwing in a little bit of “June Cleaver” into the mix! I wanted her to be more on the wicked and seductive side, not evil, someone who doesn’t have any love for her step-daughter, but tolerates her. And of course, Lucifer and Lilith just had
to have a daughter to butt heads with Dawn! I really want to, in the next book, develop Lilith’s character a little bit more. Maybe she goes a bit mad because she truly is in love with Lucifer, while he is madly in love always with Michaela.

Once I got going with the story, it took about 4 months to complete. I had intended to complete it at around 55,000 words, but I realized I wasn’t yet finished with book 1, and ended up writing it at just under 80,000 words. The day I typed that final word, I probably sighed the biggest sigh ever! I couldn’t believe I had done it and was ready to upload it to Amazon! It excites me when someone I don't know reads it and tells me
they love Gabriel and Dawn and can’t wait to see what happens with them next, because as a writer, I do believe you fall in love with your characters, and hope that it translates that way to the reader!
Ends May 1. Open internationally.
Good luck!

About the Author:
My Photo
Author of debut young adult novel, The Morning Star. Currently working on the sequel, Equinox, as well as a chick-lit, rom-com, slightly sleazy and funny story with a twist, Catching Frogs. And, because I'm loco in the roco, I've got about 12 more on the back burner. When I'm not writing I can be found kayaking, hiking, ninja-training, traveling, and taking a ferry over to the San Juan Islands to search for the elusive creature known as the "Orca." I also am constantly adding ridiculous wants, needs, must-see's and do's to my ever expanding bucket book.

I covet a delicious malbec with a rare steak and make a killer salsa.

  1. Thanks for hosting a tour stop today, Farrah!

  2. I think I'd struggle keeping a book I was writing within so many words, lol. I wouldn't know how to end a book!

    Interesting writing process =)
